At long last, New York City’s bike share program, CitiBike, is set to begin on Memorial Day. The program will be offered to members only for the first week, with daily and weekly memberships (at around $10 and $25, respectively) available the following week.
On the one hand, boy are there going to be a lot more bikers out there! But, on the other hand, that’s ultimately a great thing. What I also love about this program is the ability to one-way bike places. Bars, work, parties, whatever. This program will actually allow me to bike more. And, again, that’s ultimately a great thing.
Hats off to New York City for putting their mettle to the pedal!
Name: Ryan “Re-Re” “Ray Bangers” Walsh (aka @rjw203)
Ryan is an original member of Bike Gang! from back when this blog was just a Facebook page, and even before that in 2009 when dudes were talking about going for a bike ride one Saturday as a “bike gang” buddy adventure. Point is he goes way back. And don’t get it twisted that just cause he’s a dad now means he ain’t bike gang’ing on the reg. Just this week he pedaled to work for his first commute of the season.
Check back next week for another RPB! And if you ride|love your bike as much as we do, send us a pic to bikegangnyc@gmail with your name and a little bit on why you ride and we’ll feature you here!
The good people at Transportation Alternatives (@transalt) videotaped 35 bike riders on the Manhattan Bridge in only 1 minute. That’s a pace of over 2,000 bike buddies an hour.
Did you know David Byrne designed and donated a whole bunch of bike racks to the city of New York? I have not seen these in person, but plan to go and look. When I find them, I’ll probably say something really corny along the lines of, “This Must Be the Place.”
Got some bummer news, gang. The CitiBike Share program has been delayed until Spring of 2013. This kind of bike share program is already in DC. I’ve used it. My friends there use it. It’s awesome. It works. I’m betting it could work here, too. Here’s hoping they get this thing rolling soon.
